TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Katie Kallam Joy serves as the director of recruiting at Apartment Therapy Media based in New York City. After graduating from The University of Alabama, Kallam began her career in recruiting for a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., before moving to New York City where she is currently based. When Kallam began her job in recruiting, she knew she wanted to continue down that career path. Apartment Therapy is a publishing company in New York City, structured around home and décor.
“The parts I really love about recruiting are helping people, writing and communicating,” Kallam said. “I love that recruiting gives me even more face-to-face interaction, and exposure to all different types of jobs.”
At The University of Alabama, Kallam was a public relations major. Kallam was also involved with many organizations on campus, including Platform Magazine, Alpha Chi Omega and Capstone Men & Women.
“I think the A+PR program is a well-respected program in the industry, and I loved being a part of a program where I knew that I was getting some of the finest education,” Kallam said. “It taught me that if you work really hard, you can really achieve a lot.”
Kallam sees herself staying with Apartment Therapy for the foreseeable future and plans to help the company build upon its current success. Her best advice for current A+PR students is to be open to learning about ways to use your degree. Kallam said, “Do what you love and be curious.”
